I love working collaboratively with different disciplines. Over the last 8 years, I’ve had the chance to help companies validate and design digital solutions that help improves people’s lives.

I’m a product designer based in San Francisco Bay Area. I have 8 years of industry experiences in user experience design and passionate about solving problem with design solutions. I love products that are elegant, simple useful and usable. My philosophy is to ask "Why" before "How", figuring out users' goals and needs rather than jumping right into mockups and prototype. User stories and research are foundations to a product’s success. I love listening to users' stories, how they struggle to achieve goals and how they work around to solve problems. The most fascinating part of my job is to listen carefully what users really need, and create solutions that makes people's life easier.

Coursera

On the learner experience team, we focus on guiding learners from the first day of enrollment, learning content, taking assessment, to completing the courses. My most recent focus is on guidance and motivation. “How do we effectively provide guidance when learners get stuck?” and “how can we provide intervention before learner drop off?” “how do we motivate learners to continue to learn when a course is 2-month long?” These are the questions that I asked quite often. Through working with data science, research, I was able to create different solutions that re-engage learners and increase retention.

Other areas I’ve worked on are creating a smooth experience on Mobile, unifying our assessment-taking experiences.

Story

A little background about myself: I was born in Taichung, a suburban area in central Taiwan. Growing up, I was always fascinated at how people consume information. As a result, I choose Sociology and Information Science as my college degrees. It was a great journey but information architecture and social behavior around information couldn’t satisfy my curiosity about how we can improve the system, and stop people from suffering the poor-designed applications. I choose the field of Human-Computer Interaction as master degree in 2010 at University of Michigan,  and I couldn’t help but fall in love with various user research methodologies and user-centered design principles. Ever since I graduated, I worked as a product designer on various projects, and use design thinking to solve problems.

Facilitation

As I worked at Pivotal, I really enjoy teaching others the methodologies and the learnings I had over the past years. I help facilitate workshops hosted by Pivotal, and also loved sharing my stories at event or through one-on-one.

My Process

RESEARCH

Besides keeping up to date with design trends, user research should never be overlooked in the process.

BRAINSTORM & SKETCH

Sketching is how I get the ideas out of my head and explore the different possibilities to a problem.

PROCESS & SOLUTIONS

I’m involved in the process from gathering requirement, wireframing to collaborating with engineers.
